On November 21, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan embarked on a diplomatic visit to headquarters of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), main investor of La Gan offshore wind project, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She met with one of CIP’s Senior Partners and also toured the Middelgrunden Offshore Wind Farm, the world’s largest offshore wind farm when it was built in 2000 and remains a symbol of Denmark’s pioneering role in clean energy.
Accompanying Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan were notable dignitaries from Vietnam, including Mr. Luong Thanh Nghi, Ambassador of Viet Nam to Denmark, Ms. Le Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and representatives from various ministries and provinces.
Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan and her delegation were warmly received by Christina Grumstrup Sørensen, CIP’s Senior Partner
At CIP’s headquarters, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan and her delegation were warmly received by Christina Grumstrup Sørensen, CIP’s Senior Partner and one of the four founding members. Ms. Sørensen shared an overview of CIP’s vision and mission, highlighting their global leadership in investing, developing, constructing, and operating world-class renewable energy projects. She also praised Vietnam’s progress in green energy transition and potential for future growth to become an offshore wind hub in Southeast Asia.
Meeting between Vietnamese delegations and CIP’s leaders
The delegation also listened to the sharing of two CIP’s partners, Mr. Niels Holst and Mr. Robert Helms, regarding their plans to develop renewable energy projects in Vietnam, particularly the La Gan offshore wind project (off the coast of Binh Thuan province). The La Gan project has a capacity of 3.5GW when fully developed, with a total estimated investment of $10.5 billion. When fully established, La Gan is expected to power more than 7 million Vietnamese households, demonstrating CIP’s commitment to supporting Vietnam’s transition to a sustainable and green economy.
On this occasion, the Vietnamese delegation also visited the Middelgrunden Offshore Wind Farm. Operational since 2001, Middelgrunden was a pioneering offshore wind project in Denmark, holding the title of the world’s largest offshore wind farm at the time of its inauguration.
Middelgrunden Offshore Wind Farm
Located in the strait separating Copenhagen and Malmö, 3.5km off the Danish coast, the Middelgrunden Offshore Wind Farm has 20 wind turbines and produces 85,000MWh of electricity per year, accounting for 4% of the total energy consumption of Copenhagen. The project received a total investment of $60 million at the time, in which CIP was one of the crucial investors.
By strengthening the relationship with experienced development partners, Vietnam will receive valuable transfer in terms of knowledge, expertise as well as technological advances, thereby accelerating the clean energy development process, supporting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a green and sustainable future in Vietnam.
